European countries are the most desired place to visit for most tourists around the world due to their architecture, mesmerizing views as well as the uniqueness of their cultures. Before this, a big part of European countries encouraged visitors to their country as a source of income for them and the locals.

However, for the past few years, there have been disputes and dissatisfaction among the locals towards the tourist industry. They claimed that the flood of tourists into their country has caused many problems like congestion, damages, price increase, and many more.

Things were getting more troublesome in several popular cities where it is considered the main place of attraction for tourists. These problems have led to protests from the so-called anti-tourist group that consists of the locals. Here are some of the European countries that hate tourists coming to their countries.

10. Hvar (Croatia)

Recently, Hvar is known for being one of the biggest fest islands in Europe. The locals have also felt discontent regarding the attitude of some tourists in their country.

The local authority has also imposed strict laws to curb this problem like compounding €700 for drinking alcohol in public, €600 for wearing swimsuits in main cities, and €500 for not wearing a shirt in the city.

The tourist industry in Iceland starts to explode ever since the financial crisis that hits the country in 2008. In just a decade, the rate of tourists in the country has shown an exponential increase and now it has become a huge problem for Iceland.

Public urination, billboard theft, and stealing sheep to be roasted are some of the despicable acts of some of the tourists coming into the country which leads to the dissatisfaction of the locals in Iceland.

Now the locals are mostly fighting back to solve the social and environmental impacts due to the tourist industry.

8. Milan (Italy)

Dubrovnik is now implementing measures to calm the locals that are now furious about the acts of some tourists. The local authority has introduced a plan to control the number of tourists in Old Town city which has become the main place of attraction.

The government is also reducing the influx of ships since around 5000 tourists are coming into Dubrovnik through the port each day. The increase of tourists by 10 percent each year is also seen to be quite worrisome.

The Palma resort city on Mallorca island is without a doubt the best place to relax for tourists due to its beautiful view. But it has also led to the demonstration campaign of anti-tourist from the locals there.

Much graffitis which states to get rid of tourists is seen throughout the city. There have also been cases where the protesters threw smoke flares in front of a restaurant in the tourist area. In August 2018, it was estimated that as many as 2 million tourists were there at one time which is almost two times the original population in that city.

The city of Rome has tried many ways to overcome the issues related to tourists in Milan. The local authority has issued several warnings to prevent any more problems in the future.

Tourists are not allowed to drink alcohol on the streets at night time, jump in or bathe inside the water fountain, strip off their clothes in public, and many more. Food stalls have also been prohibited from ever operating in the city.

Santorini island is a place of heaven for most tourists in Europe. But the spurt of tourists into the city has caused many problems for the locals. During the peak season, it was estimated that 18,000 tourists come to Santorini in a day.

The locals have also felt discomfort when the place starts to become too packed, price spike, rent increases, and many buildings are converted into hotels or chalets. The City Mayor of the island has issued an order to limit only 8000 tourists a day to prevent this problem.

The capital city of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is a very vibrant city for many tourists out there and it has received around 18 million tourists each year. But the flood of tourist into the city have made the locals uncomfortable and there have been many demonstrations as a protest against the tourist industry.

The government has taken a further step to rectify this issue by banning the Airbnb service in some places, increasing the tourist tax rate, prohibiting drinking alcohol on the street, and many more rules to follow.

This has led to the congestion of the city in peak season giving huge problems to the 55,000 people living there. The local authority has introduced many rules to solve the problems such as tourists are not allowed to sit at the stairs of the church or historic buildings.

Licenses for food stalls in the public have also been stopped. The anti-tourist protest is constantly present and has been joined by the 2000 locals. Tourist buses have been reported to be damaged by the protestors to stop the tourists from coming in.
