Countries With Similar Flags Around The World

Flags are considered a country's identity and a symbol to other countries around the world. Generally, it is quite easy for anyone to identify a particular flag belonging to its respective country especially if those flags are constantly seen in big events such as the Olympics or World Cup.

But sometimes confusions still occur when it involves countries with similar-looking flags. Here we would like to share with you some of the countries around the globe that looked somewhat similar.

1. Romania & Chad

Of many flags in the world, these two flags are the ones that looked exactly the same. This is because the design, size, and choice of color as well as its positions are comparable side by side.

If we were to show these two flags separately, there is a high chance that some of you will identify them wrongly. But there is one difference that can be seen if you were to look at it closer. The tone of the color on both flags is slightly different.

2. Thailand & Costa Rica

Thailand and Costa Rica are situated far apart from each other on the world map but both of them looked almost similar at a glance. The only difference is that the colors are switched from one another.

3. Poland, Indonesia, Monaco & Singapore

All these 4 countries use the same color for the country flag and it became quite controversial during the Sea Games in 2017 being held in Kuala Lumpur. Poland and Indonesian flags only have their colors the other way around.

Whereas Monaco and Indonesia have similar patterns and colors on their flag, only the size is comparable.

Singapore on the other hand might look rather different than the other 3 with only the crescent and 5 stars on the red stripe.

4. Italy, Mexico, Ireland & Ivory Coast

Both the Italian and Mexican flag gas similar colored stripes. What makes them both different is the logo of the country being placed in the middle of the flag.

Ireland and Ivory Coast are also almost the same as Italy and Mexico but both of them have the red color replaced with orange instead with both the position being on the other sides.

5. India, Niger & Hungary

India and Niger have three similar stripes going across their flag and both of them have objects placed in the middle of the flag.

Hungary has similar patterns to India and Niger with the colors being different and no object placed in the middle.

6. New Zealand and Australia.

These two flags might be the perfect example of people wrongly identifying them. Both New Zealand and Australian flag uses the blue-colored British flag as their background with the Union Jack being placed at the top left corner of the flag.

Both of them portray the Southern Cross element. But the design of the flags are quite different in many aspects: (1) different designs of constellations which is five white stars for the Australian flag and four white-red stars with 5 edges for New Zealand; (2) the addition of the sixth Commonwealth stars on the Australian flag; and (3) different tone of colors for blue and red.

7. Luxembourg & the Netherlands

The Dutch started to use red, white, and blue stripe across their flag in the 17th century. The country's flag was inspired by the French flag with vertical stripes after the French Revolution in 1789.

Even though the location of Luxembourg is close to the Netherlands, its flag was not taken or inspired by the Dutch flag. It was self-designed with a wider size and uses a different blue-colored tone.

8. Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Guinea, Cameroon & Bolivia

This is perhaps the list of countries with the most similar-looking flags. as all of them uses the three basic color of green, yellow, and red despite it having slightly different tone.

Guinea and Mali flags are two different versions in which the position of the colors is the other way around. Senegal and Cameroon have two stars in the middle of their flag. Whereas Ghana and Bolivia use the same combination of color and stripe but has two different objects as their main decoration.

9. Norway & Iceland

All these Nordic countries have a somewhat similar design with the vertical cross known as the Scandinavian Cross that symbolized Christianity.

The design of this flag starts being used by Denmark in 1748 and was followed by other countries after the 18th century. Then the use of three colors was initiated by Norway.

10. Malaysia & United States of America

Both these flags have similarities due to their history as it was taken from 2 flag designs that looked almost similar.

The Malaysian flag originally used elements of the East India Company whereas the American flag uses the elements of the same Grand Union flag as the EIC flag.

The difference between the two is in the design of the blue square and the number of its red-white stripe.
