1. Ngerulmud, Palau (271 People)
Palau is another country island on this list that was formed by more than 340 islands and reefs that are located 890km from the Philippines.
Palau became a free country after the end of its treaty with the United States of America in 1994, thus making the administrative system of Palau formed. This ultimately made Koror City its temporary capital.
This is following the legislation of the country that made it compulsory for the capital to be moved to the biggest Island of Palau, Badeldaob Island. It was planned to happen 10 years after the legislation of the country was formed.
The plan however was forced to be on hold many times due to logistic and financial issues. The transfer project only took place in early 2000 after the government named Ngerulmud which is located on Badeldaob Island as its capital city in 2006.
Now Ngerulmud still remains the country's capital despite only having 271 people living there placing Ngerulmud as the least populated capital in the world. But this figure only accounts for 1.5% of the whole population of Palau.
