Football Vs Soccer, Which One Is Correct?

Football or as the Americans call it soccer is the most popular sport at this time. It is being played by more than 200 countries worldwide of many ages. In most parts of the world, it is called football while some call it soccer.

The debate is still ongoing about which term is the correct one despite both of them referring to the same kind of sport. Why there is a difference between the use of the word in this sport? We need to go back to the history of how it was introduced.

In the 1860s, there have been many kinds of sports that involve the ball which is played in England. It can be said that most of them were known by the name football. On 26 October 1863, several teams there gathered and agreed to standardize and use one set of rules to play their football.

To differentiate the football sport from others that were being played at that time, they decided to call it Association Football. In their daily talks, the teens there loved to end their words with 'er' to picture the sport and the members playing that sport.

However, Rugby Football was less played by poor people back then. Due to the rising popularity, the name was finalized to just football which symbolizes soccer football.

Football sports quickly grew and spread to the whole world. As it arrived in countries that have already got their own football sports like the US and Canada, it sparks a bit of confusion.

Due to that, the term soccer is still being used in these countries to differentiate between the national football sport like American Football and the soccer football that is played across other countries around the globe.
