This rice is known by its name due to the brand or packaging of the rice that features a sumo wrestler cartoon that is very synonymous with Japan. But you should know that the real name for the rice is actually Calrose rice and it is not even from Japan!

Calrose rice was truly made in the Rice Experiment Station handled by the California Cooperative Research Foundation. It was first introduced to be planted by farmers in California in 1948 and it expanded to become one of the most popular grain food there.

The word 'Cal' refers to California as expected and 'rose' means the type of rice that is medium in size. Today, 85% of the rice produced in California is comprised of Calrose rice.

Type of Calrose Rice

There are two types of Calrose rice that can be found in the market which is medium-sized rice and short-sized rice. In California, medium-sized rice is the most abundant being planted in the region.

Not just that but it is also the most consumed type of rice in countries of the Pacific Island. For short-sized rice, it is more popular in Japan and is known as the Japonica style. This type is much smaller and round in shape making it suitable for making sushi.

Benefits of Calrose Rice

Calrose rice has several qualities and interesting benefits compared to other common rice. Some of it includes no fat content. One serving size of this rice(a quarter of a cup) literally contains 0 grams of fat content.

Aside from that, this rice can also be considered very low in calories. This is because one serving size only contains 150 calories. This value is far much lower than other types of rice in the market.

Despite this type of rice having high carbohydrates, it does not have a chewy texture like glutinous rice. In fact, it is still soft to be eaten even when it's cold.

Dishes That Are Suitable For This Rice

Calrose or Sumo rice is medium-sized rice. When you are cooking with this rice, the rice will become slightly soft and sticky. Because of that, this rice is suitable for dishes that can be made into sushi, soup or taken with salad.

As mentioned previously, since Calrose rice has a rather soft texture, it can absorb other ingredients easily, retaining that strong flavor from herbs and spices really well.

Ways to Cook Sumo Rice

If you wish to know how Calrose rice is cooked, it is almost similar to any type of rice out there. You can also try this method too:
  1. Take half a cup of Calrose rice and wash it repeatedly with water until the water becomes clear. This is to remove any excess starch so that the rice won't be too sticky
  2. Pour the rice into a pot and put in 3/4 cup of water.
  3. Cook the rice as usual by using an electric rice cooker for easiness
  4. If you were to use the stove, put the heat at high first until the water boils
  5. Later, put a lid over the pot and turn down the heat so that the rice does not get burnt. Let the rice sit for around 20 minutes.
  6. When it is done, turn off the heat and let it steams for 10 minutes(without opening the lid).
  7. After that, opened the lid and loosen the rice using a spatula.
  8. It is ready to be served

One has to take note that sumo rice might not be suitable to be eaten casually, especially for people with diabetes. This is because Sumo rice has a high content of carbohydrates or sugar like any other rice.

It can increase your blood sugar level gradually if taken continuously. Other than that, Calrose rice is also lacking in fibers, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and also iron. But this rice is also very low in cholesterol and it is a great food source for those who are on a cholesterol diet.
