Top 7 Largest Solar Power Plant In The World

Solar energy is one type of renewable energy that has gotten so much demand lately as people look for other alternatives to fossil fuels. In hot and sunny countries like Asia, many countries have established several solar power plants to supply electrical energy to local heavy industries nearby.

The need for renewable energy is crucial as the world witnesses the unsustainability of non-renewables like coal, fuel, and gas that will eventually run out. On top of that, using non-renewables has caused an increase in our carbon footprint and led to an increase in greenhouse gases.

Due to that, many parties have invested billions of dollars in developing the required technology that will benefit the use of solar energy. Here we would like to share with you the top 7 largest solar power plants in the world based on the energy capacity being provided.

7. Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is a solar energy center that was built in a vast area of 77 square km of Saih Al-Dahal, around 50km due south of Dubai. This project is one of the biggest ones in the world based on the independent power producer(IPP) model.

The solar project was announced by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on January 2012. Soon the fifth phase is completed which will make this solar park have a total capacity of 900MW.

It does however have a planned production capacity of 5000MW by 2030 which will make it the largest solar power plant in the world.

6. Noor Abu Dhabi

The Noor Abu Dhabi as of November 2022 is the largest single-site solar power plant in the world. It is located near Abu Dhani in Swihen and the word Noor is in Arabic which translates to light. It is comprised of 3.2 million solar panels that provide clean energy to 90,000 individuals living in Abu Dhabi.

It utilizes robot technology to clean the solar panels without using any water. The robot will travel as far as 1,600 km every day to clean them. The project is handled by the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company, PJSC (TAQA) and it has a capacity of 1,177 MW.

5. Tengger Desert Solar Park

The Tengger Desert Solar Park is the fifth biggest photovoltaic center in the world as of December 2020. It can be found in Zhonwei, Ningxia, China. The solar park covers a vast area of 43 square km and has a huge capacity of 1,547 MW.

This solar park is owned by the China National Grid and Zhongwei Power Supply Company. The construction started back in 2012 and starts becoming operational in 2017.

4. Benban Solar Park

The Benban Solar Park is a photovoltaic power station with a total capacity of 1650 MW and an animal production of around 3.8 TWh. It is located in Benban, a western desert, roughly 650km south of Cairo and 40km due northwest of Aswan.

September 2014 was the month the project was initiated as part of the Egyptian government's Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035. At first, NASA helped by choosing the best location to set up this solar center and this project is targeted to generate 20% of electricity from renewable energy sources in 2022.

3. Pavagada Solar Park

The Pavagada Solar Park is a solar energy center with an area of 53 square km in Pavagada Karnataka. After it was completed in 2019, the solar park has a capacity of 2050 MW.

The total cost of the project is $2.1 billion and Pavagada was chosen as an ideal location due to several reasons. This area is free from high sunlight radiation, a huge vast area of land that is available and it receives little rain each year.

On top of that, there are few inhabitants here and most of them are just poor farmers.

2. Huanghe Hydropower's Golmud Solar Park

The Huanghe Solar Park is a photovoltaic energy center with a full capacity of 2,200 MW found in Golmud, Qinghai province, China. The construction was initiated on August 2009 and it became operational on 29 October 2011.

This project won the China Quality Power Project Award in 2012. Aside from that, there is also another solar energy center in Golmud with a capacity of 20MW that was completed in 2011 by Longyuan Power Company as well as other solar energy centers too.

1. Bhadla Solar Park

The Bhadla Solar Park is the largest solar power plant in the world as of today and it was built on an area of 5,700 hectares of land in Bhadla, Rajasthan, India. The total capacity of this solar park is a whopping 2,245 MW and it has offered the lowest rate for solar energy in India by $0.34 per KW-hour.

Bhadla is located 200km due north of Jodhpur and around 320 km due west of the capital Jaipur. This region is pictured as almost uninhabitable due to its climate. The normal range of temperature in Bhadla is around 46 - 48 °C(114 - 118 °F) and is also full of hot air as well as sandstorms.
